Happy National Coffee Month!

All four of my great-grandparents on my dad's side were born in Norway and as I grew up, my cousins and I learned that Norwegians drink a LOT of coffee - all day long and into the evening! Whenever I visited my grandparents or aunts and uncles, the coffee pot was always on. The grownups enjoyed delicious baked goodies while they drank cup after cup of steaming coffee. Add to that the fact that both my parents were in the Navy and you'll understand that coffee is the family beverage. I. LOVE. COFFEE.
To celebrate national coffee month, I decided to get a new coffee maker. My trusty 5 year old Mr. Coffee coffee maker still works great, but I decided to pick up a new Mr. Coffee® 12-cup Programmable Advanced Brew Coffee Maker at Walmart.
My brother and his wife have a Mr. Coffee® 12-cup Programmable Advanced Brew Coffee Maker in red that goes perfectly with their other red kitchen appliances. After visiting them and seeing how convenient the Mr. Coffee® 12-cup Programmable Advanced Brew Coffee Maker was, I wanted one. So I headed out to Walmart this week, and lucky me! - they were having a demo of the coffee maker and had an in-store coupon to save $5 on all Mr. Coffee® Coffeemakers and Espresso Units over $29. Make sure to check if your local Walmart has the coupon so you can save too!
I'm super excited because programming to have my coffee ready the night before will save me a few minutes during my groggy mornings getting ready to take my little boy to school. And it also means I don't have to physically get up to start a pot of coffee for my hubby when he has a super early morning. Yes!
You know what goes really well with a cup of deliciously brewed coffee? This classic apple coffee cake.
I love baking and eating traditional baked goodies so I thought I'd share a simple but yummy recipe for coffee cake. The basic cake can be topped with different mixtures to change things up, but I decided to top mine with apple slices, cinnamon and sugar. I think my great grandparents would have enjoyed this cake with their evening coffee, just like the hubby and I are doing right now.
I love my new coffee maker. Since it's national coffee month AND Walmart has the $5 off coupon you have a great excuse to go pick up a new 12-Cup Programmable Advanced Coffee Brew Coffee Maker too. Happy brewing!
