I went to Dollar Tree the other day and sooooooo excited to see all of the new summer and nautical items. But for sure the MOST exciting crafts items up on the display were the Dollar Tree mermaid tail wreath form and this shell wreath form.
Have you ever seen these before? I'm pretty sure they are both new this year. Anyway, I bought 5 of those mermaid tail wreath forms. As an eighties baby, I was completely obsessed with The Little Mermaid when it came out. I can't wait to see the new live action one this year.
I've loved mermaids for basically my whole life. I even had a mermaid birthday party as an adult. Fortunately I'm not alone in this. My sister-in-law and I enable each other in the continued mermaid obsession, and I'm going to make one of these wreaths for her too.
Dollar Tree Mermaid Tail Wreath Supplies
For this mermaid tail wreath craft your going to need:
- a Dollar Tree mermaid tail wreath form
- 4 rolls of glitter tulle (I used 3 of green and 1 of blue)
- 3 rolls of deco mesh
- 1 package of mesh tubing
- 1 spool of ribbon
- chenille sticks aka pipe cleaners
How to Make a DIY Dollar Tree Mermaid Tail Wreath
Starting with the glitter tulle, fill in the main part of the tail by attaching it with pipe cleaners. Skip the top wire and start adding the glitter tulle to the first wavy wire. Crunch up the end of the tulle and secure it to the very edge of the wreath form. Then bunch up another small section and attach with another pipe cleaner. Continue doing this along the wires until you have the desired fullness of the main part of the mermaid tail wreath.
For the top of the tail, use the same technique you use for a rolled deco mesh wreath. Cut 3 squares of the deco mesh, a piece of the ribbon, and a piece of deco mesh ribbon, all at about 6 inches per piece for every bunch that you will be adding to your wreath. I used 12 bunches on my wreath.
Roll the pieces up of the deco mesh and place them in your hand at a diagonal from each other along with a piece of ribbon and a piece of deco mesh ribbon. Secure those pieces together in the very center with a chenille stick.
The fins of the tail are done a lot like the top row, only on a larger scale. For each of the bunches of the fin, I cut the deco mesh to roughly 16 inches as well as a 16 inch piece of glitter tulle. Pinch the tulle and deco mesh in the center, and twist a pipe cleaner. Add that bunch to the base of the tail. For this part, I used 3 bunches per side of the fins. To get it to lay a little flatter, I added a pipe cleaner around the tops of the sections, making sure the pipe cleaner was hidden by the above layers of green glitter tulle.
To finish of the wreath, I also added this cute seahorse pick that was also at Dollar Tree. I bent the pick in half and threaded it through the wreath and added another pipe cleaner to secure it.
Here's the mermaid tail wreath on my front door:

DIY Dollar Tree Mermaid Tail Wreath
Make this adorable DIY Dollar Tree Mermaid Tail Wreath in just under an hour. Make it uniquley your own by changing up the colors and optional pick. This easy diy home decor is sure to make a splash no matter where you choose to display it.
Materials
- a Dollar Tree mermaid tail wreath form
- 4 rolls of glitter tulle (I used 3 of green and 1 of blue)
- 3 rolls of deco mesh
- 1 package of mesh tubing
- 1 spool of ribbon
- chenille sticks aka pipe cleaners
Instructions
- Construct the main part of the mermaid tail wreath by adding bunched sections of glitter tulle to the wreath form with chenille sticks (pipe cleaners), starting at the first wavy wire, all the way to the tip of the tail.
- Make the top of the wreath using the same technique as a rolled deco mesh wreath. Cut 3 pieces of deco mesh about 6 inches in length as well as a piece of ribbon and a piece of mesh tubing also both 6 inches. Create "a bunch" by layering the pieces and securing in the middle with a pipe cleaner. Use the pipe cleaner to attach the bunch to the top wire of the wreath form. Repeat this process until the wreath is full.
- To create the fins at the bottom of the tail, cut the 3 pieces of deco mesh to roughly 16 inches as well as a 16 inch piece of glitter tulle. Pinch the tulle and deco mesh in the center, and twist a pipe cleaner around the material. Add that bunch to the base of the tail. Use 3 or 4 bunches per side of the fins. To get it to lay a little flatter, add a pipe cleaner around the tops of the sections, making sure the pipe cleaner was hidden by the above layers of green glitter tulle.
- Optional: add a fun seahorse or another costal pick at the base of the mermaid tail where the fins attach
- Add a pipe cleaner the back of the wreath to hang.
