This diy mermaid backdrop is part of my Under The Sea party series.  Make sure to also check out the fun Under the Sea banner made by my friend Anna, and also my lobster bruschetta recipe.  Coming up, I'll be sharing how to make mermaid cupcakes and a tutorial on how to make paper treasure chest treat boxes, finally leading up to the full Under the Sea party which you are getting a sneak peek of now with this back drop.

To make the backdrop, I started with 4 foam poster boards and taped them together with packing tape

Then I cut what seemed like a bazillion circles using my Cricut Explore One™ from different shades of blue and green cardstock, with a purple pieces mixed in.  After, laying out my circles, I realized that half circles would use less cardstock for the look I was going for, so I cut each of the circles in half.

I arranged the half circles several different times on the poster boards until I found a look that I liked.  Then I started gluing.  Gluing all of these pieces down took 6 glues sticks! I started at the bottom of the board and worked my way up to that the half circles would lay like scales.

It took about 45 minutes, and then I had the main part of my backdrop done.

I pulled out my Cricut Explore One™ again to cut out the mermaid.  This mermaid is in the Mermaid Party cartridge and is included in the Cricut Access Standard.  I hid all of the layers except for the very last one and sized it to use the 24in x 12in mat.  If you don't feel like doing all of that, you can find my edited file here.

Now to bling this mermaid out!  I used school glue and spread it out with a foam brush working a small section at a time.

A sprinkle of gold glitter!  Then repeat the steps with glue and the glitter until the entire mermaid is covered.

After the mermaid cutout was completely dry, I glued her to the backdrop.

Since my party was outside, I also attached some ribbon loops to the back with a hot glue gun so I could secure it to my wall with Command Hooks.

And that's it!  I love it!
