I love tomatoes.  A lot.  I love them in salads, in soups, in side dishes, all by themselves... So when I saw some beautiful heirloom tomatoes on a recent shopping trip, about a million recipes ran through my head.

I decided to use the tomatoes in a simple heirloom tomato salad, where the tomatoes could really be the star.

What is an Heirloom Tomato?

I'm not going to pretend that I know a whole lot about heirloom tomatoes, but I do know that I love them and they are delicious!!!  According to Wikipedia, heirloom tomatoes are open-pollinated tomatoes.  Basically that means that they are non-hybrid tomatoes and are exactly how nature intended them to be!  The flavor is pretty intense and they smell so good.

Heirloom tomatoes can be red, yellow, green, or even purple.  I used 2 different colors of heirloom tomatoes because I thought the salad would look prettier than with just one color.

How to Make Heirloom Tomato Salad

I cut the tomatoes into wedges and topped them with a crumble of Gorgonzola cheese, and a drizzle of olive oil and Balsamic vinegar.  I then finished the salad off with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

I love this heirloom tomato salad to serve as a side dish.  It's perfect as an easy entertaining recipe or just because you want something refreshing for lunch.
