All opinions are mine alone. #WholeGrainWholeDay #CollectiveBias  Depending on how often you go on a zoo trip to your local zoo, I think a zoo membership is one of the best little investments you can make for your family.  Not only do you get to spend quality time together, it's educational and great exercise too.  My boys and I go on a zoo trip pretty often and always have a wonderful time.
Christian started kindergarten this past week and I already miss him during the day.  I was longing for some quality time with my boys, and I felt like I really needed to get out for a walk too. A zoo trip seemed like the perfect solution for both.
I was lucky enough to grow up going to the world famous San Diego Zoo.  You can spend a whole day there and still not get to see everything since it is so big.  It only takes about 3 hours to see all of the animals and attractions at our current local zoo.  But that is still quite a bit of walking and they have several really nice play areas.
All of that walking (and playing) can build up an appetite. As you may know, purchasing food at the zoo can be expensive and your options are limited.  I always like to pack a little picnic for when hunger strikes.

How to Pack Snacks for a Zoo Trip

While Christian was in school, I ran to Walmart and picked up everything we would need for our zoo trip as well as snacks for the rest of the week.
I purchased grapes, raspberries, yogurt, cheese, Wheat Thins, TRISCUIT crackers, Teddy Grahams, Newtons, Honey Maid Dippers, and belVita Breakfast Bites.   Did you know you are supposed to get 48g whole grains a day? Whole Grains for a Whole Day. Nabisco can help make it happen.  Christian is a super picky eater, so I love that I can get him some of his daily whole grains through his favorite snacks - Teddy Grahams have 8g per serving and Newtons have 7g per 2 cookies.  
While I was at Walmart I also picked up these cute little cups with lids so I could portion out the snacks.  Were you aware that toddlers are not too fond of sharing - unless of course they're sharing from you.  Anyhoo, I packed up our snacks along with some water,and then it was zoo trip time!
We made it about half way through our zoo trip before decided to stop for our little picnic.  This spot right in front of the monkeys was so much fun.  We ate our zoo snacks and watched the monkeys play.

Those little cups fit right in his stroller's cup holder, so he continued to get in his whole grains as we walked around.
It was a perfect day for our zoo trip.  It was slightly overcast, so the weather was not too hot.  Plus a lot of the animals were out and about.  This was the first time that I've actually seen the tiger get up and walk around.
Christian and I would occasionally pull out a snack as we walked too.  We both love the Triple Berry Newtons, and the Honey Maid Dippers are perfect with vanilla yogurt.   I was also able to get in 21g of whole wheat with a serving of the Sun Dried Tomato and Basil Wheat Thins - delish!
