I love baking and decorating sugar cookies.  It's one of my favorite gifts to make for people.  I like to make sugar cookies for baby and wedding shower favors.  I really like to make cookie bouquets for Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and as birthday gifts.  If you take a look at my Cookie Designs page, you will see a collection of just a few of the cookies I have done in the past.

This past weekend, I went a little sugar cookie crazy.  Our kitchen table is covered in all of my different sugar cookie designs.  The majority are decorated for Valentine's Day, so lots of hearts covered in pink, red, and white icing.  But there are still about 6 different ways I decorated all of them.

Today, I thought I would share one of the new cookie decorating techniques I have been using.  I love the way these sugar cookies look like they are covered in lace.  I think this is a perfect way to decorate cookies for Valentine's Day.

I must admit that these cookies take a little longer to decorate than I like, but I think the affect is worth the effort. The icing I like to use is made up of meringue powder, powdered sugar, water, and food coloring.  I mix up my icing and use a plain ziplock sandwich bag with the tip of the corner snipped off to decorate.

Step 1:  I like to outline the cookie first.  I then fill in the design with more icing and smooth it out with the back of a spoon.  This icing needs to be completely dry before moving on the next step.  This should take 4 to 6 hours.

Step2:  To make the flower, being by piping a loop.  Then take a paint brush (used only for food purposes) and drag the icing down to fill in the petal.  You want the edge of the petal to keep a ridge of icing, while the inside of the petal should be thin enough to see the colored icing underneath.

Step 3:  I like to make a 5 petal flower.  To do this, simple make an additional 4 petals like in the step before.  Then add a small drop of icing for the middle of the flower.  Make sure to wipe your brush off in between petals.  I keep a small bowl of water and a paper towel next to me to keep my brush clean.  For this cookie, I made 3 full sized flowers and then added partial flowers around the edges.

I love the ways these cookies turned out.  However, out of the 6 designs this is probably my fourth favorite.  Make sure to come back for the next several days to see the others 🙂  One of the sugar cookie designs is my absolute favorite out of the 5 years I have been decorating.
