Halloween parties deserve a little drama, and this smoked cocktail brings is as dramatic as it gets. With shimmering black luster dust, skull-shaped ice cubes, and a foggy swirl of smoke, this Smoky Midnight Blood Orange Margarita is the kind of drink the villains in your favorite fairy tales would sip while they scheme. It’s moody, magical, and guaranteed to steal the spotlight.
How To Make A Blood Orange Margarita Cocktail with Smoke
Here you can see making this spooky midnight blood orange margarita in my latest YouTube short.
As you could see in the video, mixing up this spooky midnight margarita is pretty easy. Add some black luster dust, tequila, triple sec and lime juice to a cocktail shaker. Instead of continuing to use the jigger, I measured out the blood orange syrup with a novelty syringe. It’s a small detail, but it adds so much Halloween flair to the mixing process. Watching that bright red syrup “injected” into the shaker feels a little spooky-science-lab and sets the tone for a Halloween party drink that’s equal parts creepy and fun. And then adding the smoke - talk about dramatic!

I LOOOOOOOOOOVE when Halloween cocktails have that smoky, foggy illusion of a cauldron brewing. But I have a confession: I’m terrified of dry ice. I’m also scared of large flocks of birds, but that’s a story for another day. There’s gotta be a reason they call it a murder of crows, right?
Dry ice, though? It really freaks me out. Touch it and you can get burned. Swallow it and you could literally suffocate. Obviously, kitchens come with sharp knives, hot stoves, and plenty of ways to get hurt — but at least we have safe ways to handle those. And I know people use it for Halloween cocktails safely, but dry ice just feels like one risk I don’t need around my already unpredictable, accident-prone family.
So, no dry ice for me. But I do love the eerie, foggy effect it gives to spooky cocktails. Which is why, when I discovered you could use a cocktail smoker to get a similar vibe — with bonus flavor — I was all in!

I really like smoked cocktails anyway, but they're especially perfect for a signature Halloween party drink.
