What's in A Shrimp Louie Salad?
According to Wikipedia, Shrimp Louie is a traditional salad from San Francisco that originated in the early 1900's. I was surprised to learn this because I assumed it was French.
This shrimp Louis salad recipe usually has shrimp, lettuce, egg, and tomato. Check, check, check, and check. But I'm one of those people who will put avocado on ANYTHING that makes sense, so I threw some slices in. I also love a squeeze of lemon on most seafood dishes, so I included lemon wedges too.

I didn't add any to mine, but some diced cucumber and celery would also be tasty in this shrimp Louis salad.
How to Boil Shrimp for Shrimp Louie Salad
Boiling shrimp is one of my favorite ways to cook shrimp because it is so easy! All you have to do is bring enough water to a boil so that when you add the shrimp to your pot, they will be completely covered. I wanted to flavor my shrimp a bit, so I added butter and seasoning salt to my water. Once your water is boiling, gently place your shrimp into the water. The shrimp should start turning pink right away. You know they are done cooking when they curl up and form a "c" shape. It should only take about 2 minutes (or less) for this to happen. Your shrimp will no longer be translucent and is ready to be pulled out of the water. I like to use a strainer to dip my shrimp out of the pot, but you can also use a colander in your sink and pour the water off. Keep an eye on these little beauties while they cook. The last thing you want to do is over cook them and end up with rubbery shrimp.

Since this shrimp is going to be used in this refreshing Shrimp Louie salad, chill it in the refrigerator until it is cold and you are ready to assemble your salad.
Shrimp Louie Dressing
A traditional shrimp Louis dressing is made with mayonnaise. I actually don't like mayonnaise very much, so I used plain Greek yogurt instead. The Greek yogurt is light and tangy and perfect as the base of this salad dressing. Cocktail sauce and worcestershire sauce are the other ingredients is this easy recipe.

That salad bottle is pretty, right? You can pick up one here. Use a funnel to add your dressing to the bottle to avoid a huge mess and a lot of frustration.
You can dress your Shrimp Louis salad right before serving or just leave it on the side for your guests to decide how much they want to add.

I love that this Shrimp Louis salad is hearty enough to serve as a dinner salad. A homemade blackberry soda or blueberry mint lemonade would go great with this and a whole bunch of other salad recipes.
