The Perfect Smoked Salmon Sandwich for Afternoon Tea

I’ve been binge-watching Bridgerton (for the third time, thank you very much), and suddenly everything in my life needs to involve tea, florals, and delicate little sandwiches.

There’s something magical about sitting down to a beautifully arranged tea tray—and no tier is complete without a smoked salmon tea sandwich. This version features soft bread layered with thin cucumber slices, and silky smoked salmon, and a cream cheese flavored with lemon juice and dill for the perfect savory bite.

Ingredients for Smoked Salmon Tea Sandwiches

  • Thinly sliced white or pumpernickel bread

  • Smoked salmon

  • Softened salted butter

  • Cream cheese

  • Lemon Juice
  • Thin cucumber slices

  • Fresh dill

  • Salt
  • Cracked black pepper

Tips for Making Perfect Tea Sandwiches

  • Trim the crusts first: This helps create even, clean edges—especially when using soft sandwich bread.

  • Butter before cream cheese: To keep things traditional (and practical), I spread a thin layer of butter beneath the cream cheese to prevent the bread from getting soggy. It’s a classic trick that works wonders—especially if you’re prepping ahead for a party.

  • Blot the cucumbers: Place your sliced cucumbers between two layers of paper towel for a few minutes to remove excess moisture. This keeps the sandwiches crisp and fresh.

  • Chill before cutting: Once assembled, refrigerate the sandwiches for about 30 minutes before slicing. This helps them firm up, making them much easier to cut into neat fingers or triangles.

  • Use a serrated knife (and keep it clean): Gently saw back and forth instead of pressing down. Wipe the blade between cuts for the cleanest presentation—especially with cream cheese!

These little touches can take your sandwiches from homemade to tea-room worthy. ✨

What’s the Best Bread for Smoked Salmon Tea Sandwiches?

Pumpernickel offers a bold, earthy base that pairs beautifully with smoked salmon, while soft white sandwich bread creates a more delicate bite. Both work beautifully—it’s all about your tea party’s style!

Choosing a Tea Set: Mix Vintage Charm with Everyday Finds

One of the most delightful parts of afternoon tea is setting the table—and nothing completes the look quite like a charming tea set. I inherited a beautiful vintage china set from my mom, complete with a matching teapot, sugar bowl, and creamer. She loved collecting china, and I’m so happy to carry that tradition on with my own tea parties. (She has four full sets… I’m well on my way!)

But you don’t need a full heirloom collection to create a lovely tea moment. I’ve found some of my favorite teacups at thrift stores, and I always peek at Ross or Home Goods for affordable sets with vintage flair.

If you're looking for something sweet and ready-to-ship, this vintage floral porcelain tea set on Amazon is absolutely lovely. It even includes a cupcake stand!

The tea set featured in my photos is one I collected over time—each piece found during a year of casual browsing at Home Goods. There’s something so satisfying about building your own set piece by piece, especially when it comes together into something so lovely.

No matter where your set comes from, the joy is in creating a moment that feels cozy, charming, and just a little bit storybook.
