Happy Valentine's Day!  Yesterday my little guy had a Valentine's day party at his preschool.  Did you know 4 year olds already know what's cool?  And it just so happens that superheros are the cool thing 🙂  I decided to send him to school with superhero Valentine's day sugar cookie treats.  But the nice thing about these sugar cookies is that they can be made any time of the year simply by switching the shape from a heart to a circle, square, or any other fun shape.

Make these heart shaped superhero sugar hero cookies for Valentine's day.

My favorite sugar cookie recipe can be found here.  I always use parchment paper both to roll out the cookies and for baking.  Using parchment means that I don't need to use extra flour and it makes clean up a breeze.  Plus, my cookies never stick to my baking sheets.

To decorate my cookies doesn't take any fancy equipment.  I always use a simple sandwich bag with the corner snipped off, and a butter knife.  And for these particular cookies, I used Americolor Gourmet Writers, which can be found at most craft stores.

To make the icing for the cookies, I use Wilton Meringue powder, powdered sugar, and water.  I use 2 Tablespoons of meringue powder, 1 cup of powdered sugar, and 1/4 cup water.  But sometimes, the consistency is off.  So, I'll add either more water or powdered sugar to get the consistency of Elmer's glue.  Once the whole batch is mixed up, I transfer a little bit at a time to make my colors.  I like to use the AmeriColor gel colors.

Each superhero cookie begins with outlining, flooding and spreading with the knife.

I do this for all of the cookies at the same time since they need to dry before moving onto the next step.

The Spiderman cookie is the only one that doesn't require another layer of icing.  After the icing is completely dry (6 - 8 hours) just draw a spider on the cookie with the AmeriColor Gourmet Writers.

Next, use the same icing technique for the logos - outline, fill, and spread, for Batman, Superman, and Green Lantern.  Again, these will need to dry 6 - 8 hours before drawing on the logos.

Here's how to draw the Batman logo with the AmeriColor Gourmet Writers:

And Superman:

Unfortunately, I did not get pictures of drawing Green Lantern, but it's just a circle with a line on top and bottom - pretty easy 🙂

As you see, I used cellophane bags and baker's twine to package up the cookies.  Make sure the ink is dry before packaging the cookies. Also, check out these gift tags I made using PicMonkey.

I used PicMonkey to personalize all of the tags for Christian's class.  I then had them printed on cardstock and used a hole punch so I could attach them to the cookies.  Again, these can be used any time of the year, not just Valentine's day.

It sounds like the cookies were a hit.  And now, a whole bunch of 4 year olds think I'm pretty cool too 🙂
